A native of Commerce, Councilmember Archie Chaney is the son of the late Thelma Chaney and Archie D. Chaney, Sr.  He is a graduate of Bryan High School , Jefferson, , and retired after 32 years of service with General Motors, Doraville, , .  Councilmember Chaney is married to Vivian Pittman Chaney and has three children: Sonya Chaney Martin, Tracey Chaney Oliver, and Robin Chaney Daniel.  He and Vivian have 6 grandchildren.

Councilmember Chaney served on the City Council for twenty two years, including 10 years as Mayor Pro Tem.  He is currently serving as Ward 1 Councilmember.  He also served one five year term (1978-1983) on the Commerce Board of Education and was the Chairman of the Board in 1983.

Councilmember Chaney is a member and Deacon of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, serving as chairman of the Men's Day Fellowship breakfast for over twenty eight years.
